Meet Dr. Míceál Cronin
Dr. Míceál Cronin, the founder of Louth Therapy, has over 30 years of experience helping individuals overcome psychological challenges and achieve their full potential. His extensive training includes:
- The University of Strathclyde, Scotland
- The National University of Ireland, Galway
- The Institute of Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, Dublin
Dr. Cronin initially studied and trained as a psychotherapist under the distinguished and highly respected Dave Mearns at Strathclyde University in Scotland, graduating in 1995.
He first became interested in the process of counselling while living and working on the Navajo Native American reservation in Arizona-New Mexico, U.S.A., in the early 1990s. Here, he witnessed the debilitating and disproportionate effects of alcohol and drug addiction that Native Americans live with as a direct result of colonialism. As a multi-instrumental musician with two decades of experience teaching music at all levels, Dr. Cronin has, from the beginning of his career as a therapist, integrated music therapy into his work.
- Dr. Cronin holds a first-class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and is presently completing a Master of Science in Pluralistic Psychotherapy.
- Dr. Cronin holds a Doctorate in the Social Sciences and has taught at all levels of the education system, from primary, secondary, further education, adult education, and at third level.
Dr. Cronin has lectured in political science, sociology & psychology, and is interested in the pluralistic approach as it opens the potential for therapists who wish to incorporate social and political resources into their work. Consequently, Dr. Cronin has utilised his wide array of knowledge, experience, and interest in several areas to therapeutically support, for example, ex-Republican and Loyalist paramilitaries in the North of Ireland.
Dr. Cronin is interested in how the social and economic forces of capitalism shape clients’ lives, and he believes that psychotherapy needs to move beyond the traditional limits of psychological and therapeutic approaches, and draw on contributions from disciplines such as sociology, philosophy, politics, political economy, anthropology, theology, spirituality and literature.
